Valentine's Day seems to be one holiday that people either look forward to or dread. I used to be in the latter category but now I just see it as another opportunity to plan a fun party for friends to get together and celebrate each other, with lots of champagne and chocolate! January is already flying past us! So, it's about this time every year that my shiny New Year's Resolutions start to loose a little bit of their shiny, and depending on how ambitious I was when making said resolutions, they may have already blown away in the wind!

Traditional Invitations and Save the Dates (with a twist)

Traditional or with a twist? What to do, what to do? There are so many decisions to make when planning your wedding and in my opinion the invitations and save-the-dates are that the top of decision making pile (right after the dress of course!) They are often the first thing that people see, for your big day, and you can capitalize on that opportunity to set the mood for the event.

Whether you want a very traditional wedding or want something completely different or you are still trying to decide, our staff at Fresh Ink can help you get your ideas literally onto paper. Here are some of the invitations we created this past year that can hopefully give you some ideas about the invitations you are hoping to create...

Save these dates:

A beautiful and traditional save-the-date. This is one of my very favorites because it is classic yet eye catching. The flourish around the initials and the beautiful script add just the right touch.

Adding photos to save-the-dates isn't really anything new but using shimmery card stock and the photo as the backdrop for your text, you get a very unique take on a photo-driven save-the-date.

Love, love, love these modern save-the-dates. Using the initials as the main feature with a simple font and a fun pop of color you have a winning design that your friends will gladly display on their fridge!

This save-the-date is a type-lovers delight! Using old fashioned western typefaces make this gray and white save-the-date very eye catching!

Invite your creativity:

Classically beautiful! If your budget allows, letterpress is such a wonderful touch to any invitation, that, combined with elegant script and a muted color make these invitations simple and gorgeous.

Calligraphy isn't just for envelopes! Using a calligraphy typeface or having a calligrapher pen your invitation is a wonderful way to make even a black and white design grab your attention.

Initials and script draw the eye to couple's names on this pretty one color invitation.

Like the previous invitation this is another example of an invitation that puts calligraphy/script together with a very simple sans-serif font to make an eye-catching invitation. The flower illustration at the top adds a unique finishing touch.

Another simple yet stunning invitation. Letterpress with a simple illustration on square card-stock and just two colors are all this invite needs to hold its own in the pile.

These invites are one of my very favorite designs from this past year. A combination of a few beautiful typefaces with a fun layout and simple border make this invitation stand out from the crowd.

We were so very lucky to get to have the beautiful and talented Claire Frascogna offer her talents specifically to us for a calligraphy event we had last month at the store. Claire was in the store all day penning names for customers to use on whatever their hearts desired! Adding hand done calligraphy to a notecard or calling card adds such an elegant and unique touch! Majority of the calligraphy we see is on wedding invitations and envelopes but it is by no means limited to just weddings.

This holiday season why not give the gift of beautiful personalized stationery, especially to that friend or family member that has everything! It's something so unique and special, they are sure to love it!

Rehearsal Dinner Invitation Done Right!

This Rehearsal Dinner Invitation Suite is one of our all time favorites! The groom's mother did a wonderful job of thinking about every detail, from the specially designed logo to the Menu adorned with beautiful hand calligraphy. These are great example of how to incorporate intricate details into and invitation suite while keeping the overall design classic and simple.

Letterpressed calligraphy paired with a classic roman typeface made the invitation oh-so-elegant. The invitation also included a blind strike of the wreath from logo which was just the cherry on top of this beautiful invitation sundae!

For this time of year, stick with the lighter cheeses; Bries and bleus are so delicious but are a little heavy for the late-summer weather. You probably already have most of these in your fridge, but if not, any local grocery should have them on hand. Try these tasty combinations:

Sweetest Donut Birthday Party

This was a donut party (my daughter's favorite) to celebrate her 2nd birthday - and of course lots of the cute accessories were from Fresh Ink! A Circus Party fit for Barnum and Bailey!

We could just do a double-back flip off the trapeze in excitement for the wonderful feature in Mississippi Magazine's current issue!

A big top baby bash hosted by Mignon Espy Edwards for her sister-in-law Alexandria, coordinated by the fabulous Shanna Lumpkin with floral by the talented Tulip Floral and invitations by yours truly! Mignon's goal was to make the event carefree and exciting to match Alexandria's personality, and was it ever! A party that includes sliders, gourmet popcorn, cupcakes, candy and good friends with live circus performers, sign us up every time.

We created mock-circus tickets for the invitations to the party, held at Jackson Country Club, with matching place cards to go on the candy and food tables. This was such a fun party to be a part of, we look forward to working with all these lovely ladies again in the future!

Kickoff Tailgating Season

The best time of the year in the South, is without-a-doubt the Fall. Not because the weather finally cools down to a tolerable temperature and not because the leaves change to the most beautiful shades of red and orange, it's because football season is finally here! We all may not agree on who the best team in the SEC is, but we can all agree that there is nothing better than spending time with your family and friends, eating good food and watching college football.

So, with the kickoff of football season just about a month away, it's time to get ready to tailgate and our new Tailgate Tables are just the thing you need to kick-off this football season right! What makes these tables so great you may be wondering? Well for one thing, they are narrower than normal tables so they won't take up as much space in your tent, allowing you more space for family and friends! (Normal tables are about 30" deep, but these are just 18" deep) The tables are also almost 9 feet long, so they will span the length of a normal tent and they fold in half for easy transport. Best of all these tables are adjustable in height, from a low "coffee table" height, to standard table height, to "bar height" - perfect for tailgate grazing, if you ask us!

In the blog it's fun to call attention to items in the store that you might not normally notice. Some things are not going to knock you over when you come in the front door at Fresh Ink the way a Seda France Japanese Quince candle does, however they are often just as fabulous. One item that I am in LOVE with lately are these tiny purfumes from Love & Toast. Lollia is the same line that created the Lollia products we are so successful with (luxurious hand cremes). These tiny bottles are just $10.50 each, and the fragrances are very fresh and summery. I have one tucked in the side door of my car, another one in my gym bag, and another one in the one quart zip lock that I keep packed for the airplane trip. The car one is the one I use the most, since by the time I pull kids in and out of the car all day long, I always need a little "freshen up" splash before I go meet someone for lunch. The fragrances are very natural - you will not smell like you are going to a cocktail party - and that is why I have really gotten addicted to them. The Importance of Thank You Notes!!!

You have planned the wedding, the honeymoon, building your new home together and a thousand other details regarding getting married and living happily every after. This is a busy time and there are a lot of things to do. It can be easy to get busy and let some things slip through the cracks. One thing to NEVER forget is sending out thank you cards for the wedding gifts you have received. Your promptness shows more appreciation and better manners, and it reassures guests that their gift was not lost or stolen. If you get gifts before the wedding, you should send immediate thank-you notes for them. This also makes it easier to remember.

It doesn't take long to express gratitude in a note and even the simplest note will go a long way in showing your thanks. Remember that wording does not need to be perfect. An imperfect note that shows heartfelt thanks will go much further than no note at all.

Do personalize your notes and make reference to the person as well as the gift.

Do remember that a gift should be acknowledged with the same courtesy and generous spirit in which it was given.

Don’t send form letters or cards with printed messages and just your signature; don’t use email or post a generic thank you on your wedding web site in lieu of a personal note.

My Jon Hart Obsession

It all started in college. While working at Oxford Floral during college, I started a collection of Jon Hart Design luggage. At the time my life was filled with car and weekend trips and it was the perfect luggage to fit the bill. It's hard to believe that I've had some of our pieces for over (ehem) 13 years. Actually, these items below were the 3 items I purchased in college. Below, they are packed for a week at the beach this summer. Do you know any Vera Bradley that has held up that beautifully?

I was even able to re-monogram the tags on my luggage from college with my new last name after I got married. These bags have been on planes, trains, and cars - and I still get compliments on how good-looking they are.

I started my sister on the obsession with this bag. It's a perfect carry-on size for the airport and fits in most overhead bins. I see her with it every trip!

This is the bag I got for Jeff. It was a nice upgrade from the black patchwork leather duffel he was carrying (blech). I had it monogrammed with just Upchurch as well so our son can use it, too!

The latest addition to my collection this year was this "off broadway" tote. I actually use it as a bag for my laptop and traveling for work. It's good-looking enough that I am not embarassed to be carrying it if I stop in somewhere to shop. But it's not your normal "briefcase bag." It does not have tons of inner padded pockets and dividers, but I find that sometimes a bag can have so many dividers that sometimes you can not actually fit very much in it. This one is just a standard tote - (it has an outer and inner pocket) but I can fit tons of stuff inside it including my large laptop. I have it in black - it's sleek and very hard-working!

Next for my collection is this backpack. I plan to use it as a diaper bag for this fall and winter. I am HOPING that because it's not so frilly and fru-fru that my husband will carry it. But also, when I am carrying it, I think a backpack will be alot easier to navigate when we are somewhere like a museum or football game rather than a bag over one shoulder. Pushing a stroller and holding a 5 year old's hand sometimes makes it hard to carry a bag on one shoulder. Plus, I think when our son is a little older HE can carry some of his own items in this bag.

Charlie's First Birthday

Little Charlie was anything but crabby on his very first birthday. His mommy (a former employee of Fresh Ink) created the cutest first birthday party for a very special little boy! Of course the invitation let everyone know what the theme was going to be - it was a Fresh Ink exclusive creation feauring a red, white, and blue polka dots complete with a precious little sand crab and a picture of the birthday boy!

Lemon Drop Martini

1 1/2 ounces vodka (use a good-quality vodka)

1/2 ounce orange liqueur (Triple Sec, Grand Marnier, Cointreau, etc.)

1 teaspoon superfine sugar or to taste*

3/4 ounce freshly-squeezed lemon juice

Ice cubes

Superfine sugar for dipping

Twisted peel of lemon

* Superfine sugar is instantly dissolving sugar that is typically used in drinks. If you want to avoid the shaking, make a Basic Simple Syrup Recipe to use in place of the sugar.

Mix the vodka, orange liqueur, sugar, and lemon juice in a cocktail shaker half-filled with ice; shake well (supposedly the cocktail is to be shaken 40 times to make sure the sugar is well blended).

Pour strained liquor into sugar-rimmed martini glass and garnish with a twisted peel of lemon.

NOTE: To create a sugar-rimmed glass, take a lemon wedge and rub the drinking surface of the glass so it is barely moist. Dip the edge of the glass into the superfine sugar. Makes 1 serving.

Let's face it, Mississippi summer days are hot! There are alot of pool parties, and it's hard to find something different that will be entertaining for a group of 7 year little girls. Kristen McCaskill had a fantastic idea for her little girl's 7th birthday - a mermaid painting party!

The invitation from Inviting Company set the theme for the party - featuring "little mermaids" just the size of the guests! The location, the Mississippi Craft Center, was the perfect spot to get creatively inspired.

Each guest had a canvas and paints, and the class was guided by an instructor. The creative juices were definitely flowing!

The cake was created by Kristen Mullen from Crumb - and not only was it adorable, it was DELICIOUS!

Each girl took home their creation as a wonderful memento from their friend's special birthday party, and no one even had to apply sunscreen!

We are completely in love with a new luggage line we just started carrying. The new Amy Butler for Kalencom is so bright and colorful - and so well made, too! Bridesmaids Luncheon Tablescape at The Gardens of Madison County 2010

This year for The Gardens of Madison County, Fresh Ink created a beautiful tablescape with the theme of a Bridesmaids Luncheon. The vibrant invitation below from Inviting Company served as our inspiration!

We were fortunate to start with a delightful setting, a covered outdoor patio in Overlook Pointe.

We moved the comfortable seating benches to surround a round table and covered the table with a punchy black and white polka dot tablecloth! Then we layered Juliska chargers & glassware, colorful napkins, daisy napkin rings. The Juliska champagne flutes would be a gift to the bridesmaids from the bride. They were filled with flowers for the table and for the girls to enjoy over the weekend, but then they can enjoy toasting another special occasion with them some day, or start a collection of their own.

The personalized melamine plates were one of our favorite elements! They serve as THE CUTEST placecards, but then they are a wonderful favor for the girls to take home from the party. The ladies who are hosting the luncheon usually send home a favor with the girls who attend, and these plates are so unique!

The polka dot Scout tote bags are another gift from the bride to the girls. They are wonderful for toting rollers, shoes, and accessories to and from the church. And they can also use them for the pool or the beach!

Despite the cloudy and rainy weather, the table sparkled with Juliska glassware and pops of color.

Coming Out Of Your Closet

Sometimes it feels like my life is lived between trips to 4 year old soccer games and washing out Dr. Brown bottles with 800 small pieces. On wonderful occasion, though, a kind friend asks us over for dinner. I am always thankful, and show my gratitude by showing up bearing nothing but kids and hungry husband in tow.

But no more.

This week, I'm starting a gift closet! I laughed at the thought before, calling it unnecessary and for packrats. But somehow my day shrunk when I had my second baby and there is never enough time for a stop to get a gift before that birthday dinner or group gathering.

Here is what's going to be coming out of the closet:
Japanese quince candle - never met someone who did not delight in receiving one of these. Recipient will think you have fantastic taste!
Seda france hand soap: a little less expensive than the candle, but still a great luxury for that special person.
Luggage tags: who does not need a new one? Tepper Jackson ones are my favorite, and I love to tie on a note that says "I'd be lost without a friend like you!" love to mail these, too.
Lollia petite treat hand cremes: so compact and easy to store/deliver, but so often appreciated.
Festive foam or frost flex cups are always a great gift for the hostess, too.
Of course Fresh Ink is my go to spot 99% of the time, but I have found some delightful items in the most unexpected places, too:
Wal-mart: I can not live without the $2.00 square glass salad bowls in their housewares section. Add a spice packet for someone to make a quick dip.
Montgomery Hardware: I got the cutest tiny collander there, it's lime green, and a very handy kitchen helper.

Who knows what else will find it's way into the closet? I guess you need to invite us over for dinner to find out.

I've been made aware about a new movement called Project 3/50. It's a national force that several locally owned businesses have joined, after this project outlined some amazing statistics. Ever since, I was asked to write this blog for Fresh Ink, I can't seem to get the stats out of my mind, and I think this is the best time to share it...The busiest month of the retail year!

Think of 3 shops that you would really miss if they shut their doors? Pop in, support them, say hello. Pick up a little something that will make someone smile. Your purchase is what keeps that business there.

If half of the employed population spent just $50 each month in locally owned independent businesses, it would generate more than $42 billion in revenue !

For every $100 sold in locally independent stores, $68 returns to the community through payroll, taxes, and other expenditures....if you spend that money in a national chain only $43 stays here, if you order on-line, NOTHING COMES BACK to Mississippi!

I about cringed the other day when I heard a local business owner say that she was going home to do her "on-line" shopping. I thought to myself, why would she want to give her money to another state, (when our state could really use it)? That is precisely how my brain is wired....and it should be the way all of us think this holiday season, as we spend our dollars. Whether it is at Fresh Ink, or any other store in the metro area.....it is important that we take a stand and support businesses. I "get" that we are an instant gratification nation, we want it now, and the click of a mouse is sometimes easier. But consider friendly service, and gift wrap. Consider the security you will feel knowing that we made sure our brides received your gift! Consider who donated that silent auction item, the next time you go to a charity event. What if you gave someone a gift, and they neglected to thank you for it - would you be likely to give them another? I know that is not why we give, but it sure is pleasing to be thanked for your efforts! Sometimes people tell me they find it hard to write a thank you note.....I tell them "you don't have to be William Faulkner, nor a comedian"...one would rather receive an acknowledgement.....rather than the wittiest, most clever thank you note ever written.

I have a "stationery" drawer, that's full of cards, personalized stationery and a few select thank you notes that I have saved over the years. Sometimes I'm inspired by these notes (whether its a quote or a Bible verse) or if I'm suffering writers block, they come in handy. Often times, just seeing them reminds me of how important thank you notes are. I try to teach my child (even if it's as painful as signing her name to a card) that prompt thank you notes are not an option. Starting your children's habit of being thankful is important. And, while on the subject of manners.... it is also in poor taste to write a thank you note via face book or email, as emails are quickly read (sometimes via a handheld) and then deleted. Also, if someone put thought into purchasing, wrapping, and delivering a gift, you cant thank them that quickly! Isn't it nice to receive someone's personalized stationery in the mail..it sure can brighten a day to walk into a handwritten note amongst a stack of bills...

Football Season anyone??? The roar of the crowds, the anticipation of preparing for a tailgate, the shout of a fight song...it doesn't matter which team you pull for, everyone experiences the same feeling when Fall rolls around! Fresh Ink has all of your tailgating needs. Here are a few of my favorite tailgate appetizers:

"MISSISSIPPI STATE SIN"
1 loaf French Bread
1 1/2 cups sour cream
2 cups shredded cheddar
1 8-ounce package of cream cheese
1/3 chopped green onion
1/2 cup chopped ham
1/3 cup chopped green chilies
dash of Worcestershire sauce

Slice off top of bread and hollow out inside. Mix all ingredients. Our into hollowed bread and put top back on bread. Wrap in foil. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour. Serve as a dip with fritos.

Poppy Seed and Ham Rolls (great for those college students who might party a lil' too much)

3 packages of small rolls or biscuits
3/4 pounds of Swiss cheese
1 1/2 pounds of ham very thinly sliced
2 sticks of butter
1 medium onion
1 tsp Worcestershire Sauce
3 tsp prepared mustard
3 tsp poppy seeds

Prepare Sauce: Chop onion into very small pieces. In a skillet melt the butter. Then add the chopped onions, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, and poppy seeds. Continue cooking until the onions are translucent and the sauce thickens.
Slice the rolls through the middle. If you have biscuits - just open them up. Spread the warm prepared sauce on the bottom of the rolls. Then add the thinly sliced ham followed by the shredded Swiss cheese. (You can substitute another cheese of your choice if you would like to.)Cover with top of roll. Brush top very lightly with some of the sauce mixture.
Tightly wrap in aluminum foil. Bake in 350 degree preheated oven for 20 minutes.
Send back to the dorm with your son or daughter to enjoy for breakfast!!!

BAMA'S BLACK EYED PEA DIP

3-12oz. cans of Black Eyed Peas (drained)
1/2 Cup of real Hellmann's Mayonnaise
1/2 Cup of real Sour Cream
2 packages of Ranch Dressing Mix
2-12oz. cans of Whole artichokes (chopped)
12 oz. bag of Shredded Cheese (your choice)
Salt & Pepper (to taste)

Mix black eyed peas, artichokes, sour cream, mayonnaise, ranch packages and salt & pepper in a casserole dish. Cover and heat in a 350 degree oven for 25 minutes. Take out of oven and put cheese on top, cover and cool off. Once you get to the tailgate heat back up while stirring often. Serve with scoop tortillas, scoop Fritos or large wheat thins. Some of our tailgaters have even slow cooked a sweet onion til fork tender and eaten that way. This dip is to die for.

Initial It!

The Monogram/Personalization craze will never end down here in the south! I think its so savvy that we are offering options now. Options that don't involve the following monogramming scenario (purchase a gift, pick out the font, the color of the font, the position of the monogram, dig through face book to find her middle initial, blah, blah,... go back and pick it up 5-7 days later, "oh! it's not ready, when will it be ready?" kind of gift) A single letter suits everyone just fine! These coozies/huggies are too cute for words! Each fabric and initial is unique. A month ago, I went on a girls trip,and one of our friends bought each of us a monogrammed huggie...what a FUN and unexpected party favor to remember the trip by!

Not sure whether to do the first or last initial? Here is a rule of thumb:

On most casual gifts you would purchase the letter of the recipients first name (very informal stationary, beach towels, beach bags, wallets).
If your friends might get married in the next year, then use their first name's initial, so that when their name changes, they can still use the gift.
If it is for the couple (example; serving plates, guest towels, napkins, linens, styro cups, formal stationary) then you would purchase the individuals last name's initial.
Basically, the more formal the gift, the last name's initial is purchased--Casual gift--first letter.

(remember from an earlier blog, that children aren't cake connoisseurs) make your own cupcakes (see recipe below), and bake them in these precious paper cupcake holders, then stick in these toothpick paper-dolls. Cupcake recipe
1 Duncan Hines Box of Yellow cake mix
A carton of whip cream
1 package of strawberry gelatin mix

Bake cupcakes according to package directions, using our paper holders. While cupcakes are cooling in their pan, poke holes all over with large fork. Mix strawberry jello according to package directions. Drizzle jello liquid over cake. Make sure jello penetrates all holes. Chill several hours or overnight. Frost chilled cupcakes with whipped topping. Insert paper dolls, or paper pirate toothpicks and serve!
